2019 IS GONE, 2020 IS AHEAD
What can
we possibly say to express our appreciation for you? 2019
began with great excitement and a lot of work as we deployed to
Florida to minister to the victims of Hurricane
Michael. That was followed by deployment to Wayne County, MI
(Detroit area) where we ministered to victims of flooding.
In both
cases, people lost their homes completely or lost prized
possessions and, in some cases, lost the lives of loved
ones. This was some of the most difficult, yet most
rewarding work we have done.
2019
also brought its own spiritual and personal challenges as we grieved
for Nicaragua and underwent some surprise physical challenges.
Please
know that we could not have done this without your prayers, your
financial support and your vote of confidence in our mission
work! We are so very grateful for you and your encouragement
to us. Below are some of the ministry memories and
challenges from 2019 and what is ahead for 2020.

From the
ashes of 9/11, the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team (RRT)
ministry was developed by Franklin Graham and the Billy Graham
Evangelistic Association (BGEA) to share Christ in the midst of
crisis and disasters. BGEA currently has chaplains in the United
States, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom. These volunteer
chaplains are carefully selected and trained to demonstrate the
compassion of Jesus Christ and appropriately share God’s hope
through the One who “heals the brokenhearted and binds up their
wounds” (Psalm 147:3).
We are
privileged to be part of a great team of volunteer RRT chaplains
who are called to serve wherever needed (tornadoes, hurricanes,
floods, shootings, etc.). As volunteer chaplains we are
required to cover the expenses of our travel. Thanks to
God’s provision through your faithful support, we are able to
respond to distant places to serve.
These
encounters led to some remarkable God moments. We saw
many men and women come to Christ, more rededicate their lives
and we prayed with and encouraged countless others. We had
the great privilege of working alongside some other dedicated
volunteer chaplains as well as the amazing Samaritan’s Purse
leaders and teams.
Some of
these God moments are included in our blog (click the titles
below).

Operation Christmas Child
Despite
Trisha’s ongoing physical therapy (which continued in Charlotte),
we were able to serve at the processing center in Charlotte for
most of November and December. It was great to be with our
OCC family and be part of such an amazing project. We had the
privilege of being part of processing 2.5 million shoe box
gifts. Each one represents a child who will hear the
gospel. Nationwide, more than 11 million shoe box gifts were
processed in 2019.

We are in
weekly contact with our partners in Nicaragua and we are
prayerfully hopeful that we can return to visit our dear friends
and our “Nica grandkids”. The situation there is still very
precarious. The government continues to clamp down on any form
of dissent. They have implemented new laws that declare any
protest as a “terrorist act”. Police and the para-police are
armed with automatic rifles and sniper rifles and they occupy all
the major intersections in the capital city of Managua and are on
constant patrol. Their focus on rounding up protesters has
allowed petty crime, drug and gang activity to increase
slightly. The international community, including the
United States, is putting economic and political pressure on the
government to return to democratic ways and observe basic human
rights. So far, the Ortega government has simply doubled down
in their efforts to maintain control and power.
Nonetheless,
our church partners report higher attendance and more salvations
since the trouble began in April 2018. We continue to help
various churches in Managua, Tipitapa and El Rama. We also
support the pastors’ families, other partners and our staff on a
regular basis.
Below are
brief updates about some of our partners and staff. Many of
you will remember them from your own trips with us.
Juan
continues to serve as the director of our Asaph Music Academy where
instrument and voice lessons are provided at an affordable
price. He also plays the keyboard at three churches each week
and teaches music and worship at the Bible Institute. We
recently provided help to him to move his wife and two daughters to
a different house which has added to the safety, security and
comfort of his family.
Oscar also
serves as a teacher in our Asaph Music Academy. He teaches
guitar and assists Juan with the piano students. His wife and
two daughters live in their own home near Oscar’s parents, but the
girls must travel to another town to attend Christian school where
they are both honor students.
Pastor
Martin is the pastor of the church in Tipitapa. He reports
higher attendance and more salvations in the months since the
country’s recent troubles began. He and his wife, two sons and
a daughter live in Tipitapa and care for his
mother-in-law. The children attend Christian school in
Tipitapa. We helped start the church in Tipitapa, purchased
the land and provided most of the funds for construction. In
the next phase, we will provide funds for improvements and
classrooms as we are able.
Pastor
Samuel is the pastor of the church in El Rama, far from
Managua. We helped start the church, purchased the land and
provided some of the funds for construction, which is accomplished
in phases. Pastor Samuel also reports higher attendance and
more salvations since the country’s troubles began. He and his
wife and two daughters live in El Rama. His son attends the
Bible Institute in Managua.
Pastor
Cesar is the pastor of our church in Managua. We started this
church in a strongly Catholic neighborhood of Managua and it was
growing before we had to leave Nicaragua. The church continues
to minister to that neighborhood and has also experienced growth
and salvations. Pastor Cesar and his wife, two daughters and
son live in Managua and care for his mother-in-law. Cesar’s
wife and one of the daughters has some serious health issues which
have included hospitalization. We have been able to help them
see private doctors and seek private treatment, which is better
than the so-called, free health-care provided by the socialist
government.
Pastor
Mario continues to lead his house church and minister to the
elderly in three different “casas de los ancianos” (old folks’
homes). We ministered with him many times at the old folks’
home in San Marcos. Now, our support is by prayer and a
monthly stipend for the elderly in San Marcos. With the aid of
the internet and Skype, Jody was recently able to speak to and pray
for the residents of the old folks’ home in San Marcos.
We have
been blessed by the Lord’s provision to assist these families with
scholarships to Christian schools, school supplies and clothing,
medical expenses and basic needs through our Nica Aid
project. Since May of 2018, we have received more than $14,000
toward the Nica Aid project and we have spent more than $25,000.

What Does 2020 Hold for Us?
It has been
difficult to be “on the bench” for a few months while Trisha
recovered from shoulder surgery. Her recovery has been long and
difficult, but both of us are anxious to get back to the Lord’s
work.
We
desperately want to visit our friends in Nicaragua. We are
prayerfully hopeful that we can make a trip in the first half of
2020. Our Nica friends will be key to giving us the “go ahead”
to visit them when they are confident that we can do it safely.
Billy
Graham Evangelistic Association Rapid Response Team Chaplains
We will
respond to the call for chaplains as natural or man-made disaster
strikes. We also hope to participate as chaplains/counselors at
some of the Franklin Graham Decision America crusade events.
Behind the
Walls (formerly Bill Glass Champions for Life)
We continue
to minister alongside Behind the Walls in prisons and jails around
the U.S. Our next prison event will be in Austin, Texas in
February.
Operation
Christmas Child Trip
In
February, Jody will travel for a few days to Trinidad and Tobago as
part of a larger Operation Christmas Child team. Trinidad and
Tobago is an island nation a few miles off the coast of
Venezuela. While there, OCC shoe box gifts will be distributed,
the gospel will be shared, and the national team of pastors and
volunteers will be encouraged and helped.
As 2020
begins, we find ourselves a year older and we hope a year
wiser. We still have health and strength and there are still
those who have yet to hear the gospel and believe. We continue
to covet your prayers as we look ahead to 2020. We are
expecting to be busy working for the Lord.
